| 演題/Title： | Changing characteristics of rice farming in the Philippines under rapid industrialization: an insight from five decades of farm survey |
| Abstract: | The Green Revolution, which is led by the combination of a seed-fertilizer technology and labor intensive crop care, is now challenged by increasing rural labor shortage in the Philippines. Using the 50-year long plot-level panel data in the Central Luzon, this presentation discusses changing characteristics of rice farming and provides an insight into the future. While mechanization and the adoption of direct seeding (labor saving crop establishment method) are the common reactions, many farmers still have to rely on the group of hired laborers. The composition of laborers becomes more diversified from different locations and the laborers’ engagement becomes more temporary than the time of the early Green Revolution period. Under such a circumstance, a principal agent problem between the farmer and the group of laborers in term of labor effort shirking can arise. Our statistical analysis shows that bonding social capital and an effort-eliciting institutional design can contribute to circumventing this problem. The farmers who utilize the bonding social capital have more inward-looking perspective than the others. While this characteristic currently contributes to the rice farming, it could be the downside in the long run by limiting their chance to establish new relationships. |
